More Lives than One: A Biography of Hans Fallada

Jenny Williams

Hans Fallada (1893-1947), was a lucid and honest witness to the atrocities of his time. Unlike most other liberal humanist writers, he stayed on in Nazi Germany, and accompanied its rise and fall with his own virtual self-destruction. His great novel of German resistance to the Nazis, Alone in Berlin, was recently a huge success in both the US and UK, over 60 years after it was originally published in 1947. In exploring Fallada's peculiar, uncomfortable yet hugely provocative life in this astounding biography, the author delves deep into German cultural history and throws new light on the German popular psyche in the first half of the twentieth century.

Jenny Williams is Senior Lecturer in German at Dublin City University. She has worked on Fallada's life and writings for many years. Her biography is based on published and unpublished sourcs, including family letters and interviews.
