Our Billie

Ian Clayton

'Most of my stories have been about living, laughing, learning. I never thought I would tell stories about coping with the death of my lovely nine-year-old daughter'

In the spring of 2006 every parent's worst nightmare happened to Ian Clayton. During a short holiday break at Hay on Wye he took his twin children canoeing, and in a freak accident his nine-year-old daughter Billie was drowned. In this extraordinary book Clayton describes in vivid detail what happened on the river that day and what followed - including the day that he came face to face with the canoe-hirers in court. But he and his wife Heather were determined not to give in to grief or recrimination, but instead to celebrate the memory of Billie and take comfort from the small Yorkshire community that had nourished her in her short life. Our Billie is an account of a tragedy but it's also the inspiring story of how a resilient family coped with that tragedy.

Ian Clayton has been a freelance writer and broadcaster for 25 years, presenting programmes on BBC TV, ITV Yorkshire, the Discovery Channel and frequently on radio. He was born in west Yorkshire, and still lives there, in the former mining village of Featherstone, with his partner Heather and son Edward, Billie's twin brother.
